The Devil and Emily Dickinson

By Bruce Stirling

Emily, oh, Emily
what did I see?
last night
in the headlights
the devil t’were He;
I dare not stop
dare not chase,
for the demon seed
had seen my face
Emily, oh, Emily
hear my strife,
weave me a poem
a thread of light,
for the cross has left me
can’t you see?
Emily, oh, Emily
it’s up to thee
