Open 2025 Poems - Garvita Srivastava

Grief
By Garvita Srivastava

I never wanted you
to be a part of my life.
But you slowly seeped in
through cracks and crevices,
filled me up and I started noticing
things about me I never imagined
I would. You were there wrapped
around me the night I couldn't breathe.
You found me on my way back from work.
You walk miles with me but never tire. No
matter how far I travel, you never leave my side.
I have caught you peeping in my fondest moments.
I have seen you in my dreams. I've seen you
cradling me to sleep every night. You held
my hand like you'd never let go. And you
didn't. You kept your promise. You
surround me like air, I feel you in
inexplicable ways, clutching my ribs,
holding me hostage in my own body.
I try to release you, but you hold on ever
so tightly. No one has ever been as
consistent as you, grief.
