Shishir 2025 Poems - Elian Gamino
Drink
By Elian Gamino
I’ve lived
most my life sober as a cat.
My perception completely unaltered,
all clear and logical. It’s misery,
or it became that way after twenty-
one years of seeing things as they were.
Trees were still just that. Poems I’d read
told me nothing they hadn’t before.
Sure, I could explore. I could ponder some
old-hat topic, gain some new perspective,
a new way of thinking. But my eyes get
no update. They see everything the
same. I wanted a filter and found one.
A drink draws warmer light into my eyes,
changing vision’s subjects from concrete things
to carefree actors. Now, though, I can’t think
too well. Thoughts just sink into hazy pits.
